Pregnancy Changes How Your Body Moves

Pregnancy affects more than the size of your belly. Your center of gravity shifts as your baby grows. Hormonal changes can also make your ligaments more relaxed and your joints more mobile.

Your muscles must adjust to these changes. This can place more strain on your lower back, pelvis, hips and other joints. Even familiar movements may begin to feel different.

Prenatal chiropractic care focuses on how these physical changes affect your movement and comfort. Your doctor will look at what has changed and where your body may need support.

Why Do Pregnant Patients Visit a Chiropractor?

Pregnant patients often seek chiropractic care for new pain, stiffness or changes in movement. Some concerns begin early in pregnancy. Others appear as the belly grows and more weight shifts forward.

Common reasons for scheduling a prenatal chiropractic evaluation include:

  • Lower back pain

  • Pelvic or sacroiliac joint discomfort

  • Hip pain or stiffness

  • Discomfort near the pubic area or groin

  • Pain or tingling that travels into the hip or leg

  • Rib or upper back tension

  • Neck and shoulder discomfort

  • Changes in posture or balance

  • Difficulty getting comfortable while sitting, standing or sleeping

These symptoms can have more than one cause. Your doctor will review your concerns and examine how your body is moving. They’ll then explain whether chiropractic care may be suitable for you.

What Is the Webster Technique?

Dr. Erin Bishop has completed additional training in the Webster Technique. This technique is often used by chiropractors who care for pregnant patients.

The Webster Technique includes a specific assessment of the sacrum and sacroiliac joints. These joints connect the pelvis to the lower spine. The goal is to identify joint dysfunction and improve movement in the pelvic region.

Care may include a focused adjustment and attention to nearby muscles and ligaments. Dr. Erin combines her Webster training with the clinic’s low-force, instrument-assisted approach.

You may have heard the Webster Technique described as a way to turn a breech baby. That isn’t its purpose. The technique focuses on the pregnant patient’s sacrum, pelvis and related joint function.

We don’t promise changes in fetal position, labor length or birth outcomes. Those concerns should be discussed with your obstetrician, midwife or other prenatal healthcare provider.

How Is Chiropractic Care Adjusted During Pregnancy?

Your comfort and positioning needs can change throughout pregnancy. A position that feels comfortable during the first trimester may not work later. Our doctors adapt your position and the amount of force used as your pregnancy progresses. They use controlled, instrument-assisted adjustments without rapid twisting of the neck or back. You’ll have time to get comfortable before care begins. Tell your doctor if a position causes pressure, dizziness, pain or any other concern. Your position can be changed at any time.

Your doctor will also consider your health history and current stage of pregnancy. Please share any complications, activity restrictions or recommendations from your prenatal provider.
